Jack Meijer, representing the University of Wisconsin, was agonisingly close to a place in the final of the 1500m at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Running in the first of three heats, with three to automatically qualify plus three fastest losers, he was in fourth place at the bell in 2:48:66. In the last lap scramble for the places, Jack ran 58.29 but was sixth at the finish, just one hundredth of a second behind fifth place, and that was to prove decisive.
The second heat was a slow tactical affair won in 3:50, so that Jack was still in a fastest loser spot. However the third heat, run slightly slower than the first, produced four times quicker than Jack’s which meant that he had missed out on a place in the final by the thickness of a vest.
