The Marshall Milton Keynes Senior Team, third in Division 2 West at the start of their match at Stantonbury, faced Epsom & Ewell (2nd), Basingstoke (4th) and Newbury (6th). It was likely that the winner would gain promotion back to the top flight next season, while the rest would have their hopes dashed. With 5th-placed team, Dacorum & Tring finishing last at Kingston, MMK’s win puts them at least second in the league, with the top two to be promoted. A win in their last fixture at St Albans on 17 August will guarantee promotion.
The match was, in the end, very close between MMK and Basingstoke, despite MMK leading by more than 20 points at one stage. However, a final surge from the visiting club, narrowed this down to just 5 points at the end.
Among the highlights of the day was a return by Chris Clarke after 3 years of injury, running 21.7 for 200m, a pb by Abby Roskilly in the 800m, a win by Chuko Cribb in the Triple Jump, and a fine throw of 41.12 by Emma Beales in the Discus.
